About Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine uses plant remedies to treat and prevent disease. Modern herbal medicine is based on the oldest and most widely practised system of medicine; it benefits from tried and tested tradition and ever-increasing scientific research as it continues to gain in popularity.
A professionally trained medical herbalist has learnt the same diagnostic skills as an orthodox practitioner but he/she assesses each person's complaint as it pertains to the individual.
The symptoms of illness are interpreted as the body's expression of a deep-seated problem and their suppression - i.e. treatment of these symptoms alone - will not enable healing to take place. Thus the underlying cause of the symptoms is sought: the weakened organ or system of the body can then be treated with medicinal plants: regaining health can be achieved when the body's ability to help itself is restored.
When You Visit
When you visit a herbalist you can expect the first consultation to last between 1 and 1½ hours. A detailed account of your current complaint as well as your medical history will be taken. Your diet and lifestyle will be considered. Physical examinations, e.g. blood pressure reading, may be performed.
Follow-up consultations usually take place 2-3 weeks later and last for about half an hour: time to check on progress, discuss concerns and to adjust medication if needed.
Children's consultations tend to take less time.
Almost any complaint - physical or emotional - that you might take to your GP can be successfully and safely treated with herbal medicine.
